UPSURGE

Proposal for our Trafford Park factory

Published February 2024

What we have announced

We’ve announced a proposal to close our Trafford Park factory in three years' time at the end of 2026. This puts around 360 jobs at possible risk.

We know generations of families have worked at our Trafford Park factory and this proposal has nothing to do with the dedication of the outstanding people who work there.

Our UK home will remain in Greater Manchester as our MediaCity office in Salford, where we employ around 520 people, is unaffected by this proposal.

Why have we made this proposal?
Our Trafford Park site opened in 1938.  It’s laid out in a way that made sense in the 1930s, with food travelling up and down six floors to be made.  With changes in industrial design and technology, you just wouldn’t lay out a factory like that nowadays.
The investment required to maintain the factory in the coming years is also simply not viable, particularly given we only use half of the space in the building.
That’s why we can’t currently see a long-term future for our Trafford Park factory.
What does this mean for the colleagues who work at our Trafford Park factory?
We know this will be difficult for many to hear and that’s why we now want to focus on our people.  We will now enter a period of detailed conversations and consultation with colleagues’ trade unions and employee representatives. We will discuss our proposal and show our people how we will support them in the right way should this change happen. We expect these formal discussions to last around 90 days.
What does this mean for the rest of Kellanova operations in the UK?
While we are reviewing our Trafford Park factory, our UK home will remain in Greater Manchester. Our MediaCity office in Salford, where we employ around 520 people, is unaffected by this proposal. MediaCity will stay as our UK headquarters and technology hub for Europe.
Our other UK cereal factory and Portable Foods facility in Wrexham and our St Helens’ distribution centre, which together employ around 400 further people, are also not affected by this announcement.

That depends on whether our proposal goes ahead. What we’ve said is that we want to share our thinking with colleagues and start a consultation with them and unions. Should our proposal go ahead, we see the factory shutting in three years’ time at the end of 2026.
Greater Manchester will very much remain our UK home. Our MediaCity office, where we continue to employ more than 520 people, is unaffected by this announcement. The UK remains important for us – it is our largest Kellanova market globally after the USA. Our Wrexham factories and St Helen’s distribution centre are also unaffected by today’s announcement of the start of consultation at Trafford Park.
As part of the formal process, we will discuss with unions how we might help colleagues should this change happen. First, we will go through the appropriate consultation process and, given our commitment to do this, it would not be right to comment any further at this time.
If this proposal is accepted, the site will close in three years' time at the end of 2026. We will now enter a period of consultation, where we will have formal discussions with colleagues, their unions and other representatives.
Kellanova is the name of the company that owns the Kellogg’s brand. Previously we were called the Kellogg Company (commonly known in the UK as Kellogg’s).
Trafford Park colleagues who have questions about this announcement can reach out to a member of the Plant Leadership Team. If you are an office-based colleague, please speak to your Line Manager.
